Artbarn Discover:
Printmaking taster workshops
Whether you’re a beginner or wanting to refresh your skills, you’ll be most welcome at these fun, hands-on workshops led by your tutor, Amy.
Each Artbarn Discover workshop offers an introduction to a different printmaking method. The 4 workshops can be booked individually or as a short course.
In each session you can expect to learn exciting new skills and create your own unique work of art to take home and enjoy.

apply ink to the gelli plate
create texture using different objects and stamps
layer and combine colours effectively
use techniques including masks and stencils

A ‘monotype’ is a ‘one-of-a-kind’ print. The results can vary from fine-lined drawings to much more painterly pieces.
In this session you will have the opportunity to:
prepare the print plate by inking-up in different ways
experiment with drawing into the ink using a variety of tools
use stencils and masks
create added interest through layering

This is a form of ‘relief’ printing where the upper surface of the plate is carved, inked-up and printed with the option to repeat the print multiple times.
Skills taught in this session include:
an overview of materials and tools
basic carving techniques and safety considerations
image selection and transfer to the relief block
single colour inking and printing from the relief block

Collagraph is a highly versatile printmaking technique.
In this session you will:
learn to create tonal variety with different collagraph materials on a Tetra Pak base
make a simple collagraph plate of your own design
find out how to ink-up the plate using the ‘intaglio’ method
make a print using the etching press

Session 1: Making and printing a multi-block linocut.

In this short, 2-session (6 hour) course you will learn exciting techniques for how to make and print an A4 (or 2 x A5) collagraph plate:
Tuesday 29 April 6 - 9pm:
Session 1: Learn how to create tonal variety and texture in your collagraph prints. Select materials to build up your collagraph print plate based on your own design A4 (or 2 x A5).
Tuesday 6 May 6 - 9pm:
Session 2: Learn how to ink up and print your collagraph plate in different colours using the intaglio method. You will also have the option to incorporate collaged papers into your prints.
